River Islands Lab for 4th-12th Teachers: Mornings, July 11-25
GVWP Demo Lab: Connecting Content-Area Reading & Writing — Register Online!
COURSE CONTENT: During the two-week course, participating teachers will study and collaborate in grade-span groups with veteran leaders. Each day, participants will observe demonstration lessons, interact with real students, and meet with colleagues to discuss instructional outcomes and implications. GVWP Consultants will help teachers understand the new CCSS (Common Core) standards, and model lessons will address those standards using proven methods that promote academic growth. The students in our workshops reflect real-world demographics; in just two weeks, participants will see how effective instructional techniques can help young writers develop skill and confidence at all ability levels.
TIME SCHEDULE: To better support active teacher engagement in the learning activities, the course leaders have decided on an earlier start and finish time. (The Demo Labs at Ripon run from 8:30-12:45; the River Islands Demo Labs will run from 8:00-12:15.) During the morning meetings, before students arrive, leaders will "frontload" each day's activities by previewing lessons, explaining teacher roles, and suggesting specific techniques for teacher-student interactions. During the post-workshop sessions, after students have left, teachers will share what they observed during the day, discuss their assigned readings, reflect on new ideas, and consider implications for their own classrooms.
ABOUT THE TEXT: Teachers will read Texts and Lessons for Content-Area Reading by Harvey Daniels and Nancy Steineke. Teachers may be surprised to discover that meeting the CCSS (Common Core State Standards) can be fun! Whether you work in a content-area or language-arts classroom, Daniels and Steineke provide kid-tested nonfiction texts with simple, ready-to-go lessons that add to, not steal from subject-matter learning. The authors prove that with the right materials and lessons, teachers can turn kids into much better readers by showing how proficient readers think and how skillful collaborators act. With a combination of interesting texts, smart-reader strategies, and explicit modeling of discussion skills, Daniels and Steineke show us how to deepen comprehension and support effective collaboration – exactly what the new CCSS requires.
Selected chapters are available for online preview: http://www.heinemann.com/products/E03087.aspx
