River Islands Lab for 2nd-4th Teachers: Mornings, July 11-25
GVWP Demo Lab: Crafting Young Writers -- Register Online!
COURSE CONTENT: During this eleven-day course, a group of elementary teachers will study and collaborate with a powerful team of veteran educators. Each day, participants will observe demonstration lessons, interact with real students, and meet with colleagues to discuss instructional outcomes and implications. GVWP Consultants will help teachers understand the new CCSS (Common Core) standards, and model lessons will address those standards using proven methods that promote language development and academic growth. The students in our workshops reflect real-world demographics; in just two weeks, participants will see how effective instructional techniques can help very young writers develop skill and confidence at all ability levels.
TIME SCHEDULE: To better support active teacher engagement in the learning activities, the course leaders have decided on an earlier start and finish time. (The Demo Labs at Ripon run from 8:30-12:45; the River Islands Demo Labs will run from 8:00-12:15.) During the morning meetings, before students arrive, leaders will "frontload" each day's activities by previewing lessons, explaining teacher roles, and suggesting specific techniques for teacher-student interactions. During the post-workshop sessions, after students have left, teachers will share what they observed during the day, discuss their assigned readings, reflect on new ideas, and consider implications for their own classrooms
ABOUT THE TEXT: Teachers will read Crafting Writers by Elizabeth Hale, a powerful book packed with practical information that teachers can use immediately in their classrooms. In the book, Hale shows how to identify specific techniques that make up quality writing, and she explains how to teach explicit elements of the author's craft that can move students forward as writers. She presents a concrete process for noticing craft in student writing, and she illustrates this process with numerous examples. Filled with easy-to-use charts and practical lessons, Crafting Writers provides clear insight into identifying and teaching the small elements that make good writing successful.
Selected chapters are available for online preview: http://www.stenhouse.com/html/crafting-writers-k6.htm
