Join expert teachers who understand how to create skilled, confident writers!
“...A great way to revamp your curriculum and reenergize your passion for teaching.”
— Catalina Papaioannou, past participant
In these exciting demonstration workshops, teachers explore instructional practices that help students face the new demands of the Common Core standards. Participants read, discuss, and observe expert teachers working with real students in a full-sized classroom laboratory. Together, teachers discover effective ways to increase student motivation, confidence, and achievement at all ability levels.
Are you a working parent raising school-aged children? Our Demo Lab courses allow your children to attend K-12 writing programs while you attend our GVWP classes for educators! (Teachers must enroll themselves first; they will receive special instructions for enrolling their children.) — Click here to view information about the student workshops.

GVWP Demo Lab: Teaching Real-World Writing Through Modeling & Mentor Texts -- Register Online!
COURSE CONTENT: During this two-week course, participating teachers will study and collaborate in grade-span groups with veteran leaders. Each day, participants will observe demonstration lessons, interact with real students, and meet with colleagues to discuss instructional outcomes and implications. GVWP Consultants will help teachers understand the new CCSS (Common Core) standards, and model lessons will address those standards using proven methods that promote academic growth. In just two weeks, participants will see how effective instructional techniques can help writers develop skill and confidence at all ability levels.

ABOUT THE TEXT: Teachers will read Kelly Gallagher’s Write Like This: Teaching Real-World Writing Through Modeling and Mentor Texts. In his text, Kelly emphasizes real-world writing purposes, the kind of writing he wants his students to be doing twenty years from now. Each chapter focuses on a specific discourse: express and reflect, inform and explain, evaluate and judge, inquire and explore, analyze and interpret, and take a stand/propose a solution. Recognizing the importance that modeling plays in the learning process, Write Like This is built around a central premise: if students are to grow as writers, they need to read good writing, they need to study good writing, and, most important, they need to emulate good writers.
Selected chapters are available for online preview: http://www.stenhouse.com/html/write-like-this.htm
NOTE TO PAST PARTICIPANTS: If you attended the 2013 DemoLab at Ripon High, you cannot earn units by repeating this level. To earn units from CSU Stanislaus, 2013 participants must enroll in the “Write Like This – Digging Deeper” course. Click to view “Digging Deeper” and other DemoLab course options.
