GVWP Book Study: A Place for Wonder – Reading & Writing Nonfiction (Grades K-3)
In this 15-hour course, teachers will read A Place for Wonder: Reading and Writing Nonfiction in the Primary Grades by Georgia Heard and Jennifer McDonough. This practical resource shows that nonfiction can be every bit as exciting and wondrous as fiction for young readers, as long as the seeds of curiosity are planted.(Click to preview the text.)
Teachers will meet six times over a three month period. At each session, participants will pose questions, share experiences, and develop new insights with colleagues. Together, teachers will discover better ways to address CCSS standards and help their young students become successful readers and writers of nonfiction. ADDRESSING THE DEMANDS OF THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS:
The Common Core standards suggest that students in primary grades should comprehend informational texts and write informative/explanatory texts with steadily increasing proficiency. Students are expected to build knowledge by conducting research projects, taking notes, sorting evidence, and organizing ideas, and to produce writing that conveys ideas and information clearly. These goals are achievable, but how can teachers help struggling young writers get there? In A Place for Wonder, the authors build a bridge to transport children into the world of nonfiction reading and writing. Through “wonder centers,” guided sensory observations, firsthand collection of data, and cleverly-structured research projects, the authors provide teachers with numerous, practical ways to create a classroom environment where students’ questions, observations, and writings are part of daily work. The text also features a step-by-step guide to planning a nonfiction reading and writing unit of study, which includes a variety of nonfiction craft lessons... A Place for Wonder will help teachers create classrooms where active, engaged learning provides fertile ground to develop intelligent, inquiring minds.
