Superman Ultimate Fright
Last year I saw a commercial on TV for a new ride called Superman Ultimate Flight and had wanted to go, so coincidentally, we had gotten tickets to Six Flags from a reading program my brother had been in. The month that the ride was complete, my family (including my uncle, my aunt, and my cousin) and I went to Six Flags. My cousin, Jeremy, and I had gone on all of the rides together, except for one, Superman Ultimate Flight. After my cousin and I had recovered from the 150 foot drop of Vertical Velocity, we staggered away, past The Woody, to feast our eyes on the buffet of corkscrews, loops, and vertical drops that was Superman Ultimate Flight. We hurried to osmose ourselves into the endless crowd of eager adventurers. I inspected the area. There were posters of excerpts from old Superman comics laden around the perimeter of the waiting area and people that dressed up in costumes from the Superman franchise.“ This better be good, this line is hecka long,” my cousin bellowed as he glanced at the length of the line. When the previous riders exited the coaster, I started to hyperventilate at the anticipation that I was finally going to get to experience this thrilling ride. The second the gate opened I bolted to the seat on the right and lowered the restraint on to my lap, but there was one little problem, the restraint would not go all the way down. I was trying to lower the restraint all the way down but, suddenly, the man from the booth on the right side of me pressed a button on a device that controlled the ride and my lap restraint locked in place, an inch from my lap. My heart was beating a mile a minute from the events that have just befallen me. Suddenly the coaster lurched forward through a Superman shaped tunnel and climbed upward. Then it fell back through the tunnel and curved up backwards. It started to gain speed as it entered the tunnel one last time and started to ascend rapidly until I was at the top of the rides giant loop. It was sluggishly twisting around a corkscrew until it was completely upside down. My heart rate was elevating quickly and I could hear the pounding of my heart thumping in my ear as I tightened my grip on the bar in front of me. My hands were becoming clammy, sweaty, and began to pulsate from the stress that was put upon them as my lap slowly broke away from the restraint. Cautiously, I looked above me and realized the jagged plastic seams at the top of the Superman shaped tunnel which encouraged me to tighten my grip on the bar in order to prevent falling from the tremendous height on to sharp spikes, I would have to be Superman to survive that. With the last bit of strength left in my body I mustered a blood curdling scream, “I don’t want to die today!” And suddenly, I felt a helping hand on my chest restraining me from myself and death. I looked over to my left and saw that the hand belonged to none other than my cousin, the one who had initially gone on the ride with me. Not too long after, my adrenaline kicked in as the ride slowly unwinded from the corkscrew and started to fall back to the Superman shaped tunnel. I took a deep breath as the coaster ascended backwards because I was relieved that the worst part was finally over.
Winter
Winter is a time for sledding,
a time for snow,
a time for drinking...
hot cocoa.
A time for blankets,
a time that’s white,
a time kids have...
snowball fights.
A time for Christmas,
a time for jingle,
a time so cold...
my body tingles.
A time for igloos,
a time for fun,
a time to celebrate...
everyone!
