GVWP Writing & Technology Workshops for K-12 Students
What are the Writing & Technology Workshops?
Each summer, top educators from our region descend upon quiet school sites in south San Joaquin county, transforming the empty classrooms and computer labs into active, vibrant learning centers. These intensive two-week programs are presented by Great Valley Writing Project at CSU Stanislaus, and they offer unique opportunities for students to develop their writing and publishing talents.
How Is This Workshop Different From Traditional Summer School?
In these nonprofit, community-subsidized workshops, GVWP Consultants, technology leaders, and classroom teachers meet in grade span groups to study, explore, and master the art of teaching writing. Using a “workshop” approach that emphasizes both teamwork and individual responsibility, teachers and students work together to create a collaborative environment that supports productivity and learning. The students benefit not only from an intensive focus on writing instruction, but also from an abundance of teachers who are constantly seeking ways to help them move forward as writers. When immersed in this community of writers, students show improved motivation and dramatic acceleration in writing skills. Teacher-to-Student Ratio is 1-to-5 or better!
Teachers have plenty of one-on-one instructional time to assess the needs of each student and provide individualized guidance. • each teacher personally mentors just 4 - 5 students; • struggling writers receive close personal attention & intervention; • aspiring authors find opportunities for advanced instruction; • teachers can help every student reach his/her highest potential. Everybody Wins!
Whether a student gets high grades or low grades, whether she loves writing or hates writing, whether he is enrolled in GATE or has special needs – it doesn't matter. When each teacher devotes regular one-on-one mentoring time with a small group of kids, and when an entire team of teachers and students work together to help each writer succeed, the growth can be phenomenal.
